CHED Scholarships for Anesthesia Department

Anesthesia departments must adopt certain practices which meet their unique operational requirements. The relative significance of each of these user groups will largely be determined by the objective of a patient’s department. Four categories of patients will typically be considered: surgeons, nurses, the hospital administration and the anesthesiology staff. Anesthesiologists will commonly perform all four functions within a typical facility.

Within every category of patient, however, will come several sub-groups. Within each sub-group, there will usually be a set of specialized duties and responsibilities. Anesthesiology is one such area. Anesthesiologists are primarily responsible for administering the drug mixtures required to render surgery and general anesthesia successful. Nearly every anesthesiologist is also certified in the administration of general anesthesia. Specialized education and training may also be required, particularly in the administration of narcotics.

Anesthesiology departments often require the employment of nurses with a specific degree of medical knowledge. Anesthesiology nurses perform specific duties in an anesthesiology department; including but not limited to obtaining and administering basic anesthesia, monitoring a patient’s heart rate and respiratory rate, instructing patients on the use of their oxygen and monitoring their blood pressure. Anesthesiology nurses are typically employed in hospitals, research facilities, or other medical environments where they are responsible for providing comprehensive anesthesia services. If a nurse specializing in anesthetics leaves her position in a hospital, she may be reassign to a facility that needs her services, or she may choose to pursue her education and certification further and open her own private practice.

Anesthesiology and pain management specialists also operate under the umbrella of anesthesiology departments. Anesthesiologists and pain management nurses will work together to treat patients in the hospital or in a clinic and provide pain management services for the facility. An anesthesiologist is primarily concerned with the out-patient care of a patient, but he or she may also order lab tests or other procedures in order to aid in the management of a patient’s condition. Pain management specialists deal directly with the patient and his or her family, and will work closely with the physician in charge of the patient’s care.

Many physicians and hospital leadership consultancies focus on providing training to medical professionals interested in anesthesiology. This can include physicians, nurses, and anesthesiologists who are already trained in the field. These individuals are often involved in a fellowship program in anesthesiology. During this time, these professionals are taught the basics of surgery, anesthesiology, and safety precautions while in the hospital. Upon graduation, most anesthesiologists and other members of the anesthesiology group find employment in a hospital where they are most comfortable performing their job. Upon completion of their education and certification, these individuals may find employment in a variety of settings including pain clinics, hospitals, and pain management clinics.

In addition to physicians practicing in an anesthesiology group, there are anesthesiologists who specialize in specific areas of medicine. These physicians should have completed additional training that enhances their knowledge of pain management, such as cardiology or orthopedics. Many physicians who choose to be anesthesiologists specialize in an area of medicine that furthered their education. Anesthesiology is a rapidly expanding field, and anesthesiology specialists are required to complete many years of schooling before specializing in that particular area of medicine.

Anesthesiologists also perform additional tasks within the anesthetic department besides simply providing anesthesia services. These tasks include preparing patients for surgery, monitoring vital signs during the procedure, ensuring that the patient is comfortable, and taking vital signs of possible organ function during postoperative times. Anesthesiologists are typically considered part of the surgical team rather than the direct surgical staff. Because of this, anesthesiologists are more likely to receive extra training and are usually required to complete additional residencies. While anesthesiologists should not be confused with neonatologists or surgeon-directors, they often play a critical role in surgical cases.

Anesthesia departments in general have a high demand for qualified individuals due to the increase in surgical cases requiring anesthetic procedures. Many medical centers require their anesthesiologists to complete specialized schooling before gaining entry level privileges. In addition, most specialty offices prefer applicants who have a degree in anesthesiology or related fields such as radiology, neuroanatomy, phlebotomy, and other related specialties. Those who successfully meet the requirements of residency, certification, and experience can pursue jobs in many different anesthetic department positions at hospitals throughout the United States.
