AERONAUTICS & ASTRONAUTICS Department is a division of Aeronautics & Science Products Corporation. Aerospace Engineering is a specialized engineering field that is primarily associated with the design and development of space vehicles and aircraft. The company produces a variety of space vehicle parts such as reusable launch vehicles, boosters, strap-on solid rocket motors and membranes for spacecraft heat shields and radiator blankets. They have also manufactured parts for unmanned aerial vehicles and the U.S. Military.
Aeronautics & Astronautics Department was founded in 1948. It is a division of NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This department was designed to provide ” manned space flight programs for the aerospace engineer”. The primary focus of the organization is to test and qualify all aerospace engineers both before and after they have received a flight certification from NASA. This testing helps them to maintain their skills constantly.
A certificate program in aeronautical and astronautical engineering is offered by the Air Force Academy. This program prepares students for a two-year bachelor’s degree. Two other options are available: an accelerated Bachelors of Science (BS) in aerospace engineering or a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS). Students looking to further their studies can enroll in a graduate program also called an MHA. An Aeronautics & Astronautics graduate student may be eligible for federal funds based upon his /her grades. In addition, there are scholarships and fellowships from the NASA Office of Education and the National Space Society.
Aeronautics & Astronautics is governed by a board of trustees and is a division of the Air Force Academy. The principal executive officer is a retired Air Force General. Other key faculty members are astronautical engineers John Lassner, Robert Stone, and astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell, and Thomas Stafford. A junior college is also located in Arlington. A number of campus activities allow graduate students to participate in campus tours and to meet current students.
A research center for Aeronautics & Astronautics is located on campus. This facility houses several laboratories and space systems testing facilities. Students in the graduate school can conduct independent research projects as part of their course work. The Aeronautics & Astronautics Research Center has received funding from the National Science Foundation.
The Aeronautics & Astronautics jointcs with the Computer Science Department and Computer Engineering Institute. The Computer Science department provides students with the necessary laboratory knowledge to conduct advanced engineering and scientific research. They have over eight thousand square feet of total labs space and employ over five hundred staff members. The department has various student groups such as the Game Designers, Video Game Designers, Optical Fiber Technologists, and Computer Engineers as well as industry specific concentrations such as wearable technologies, nanotechnology, and optical fiber technology.
The Aeronautics & Astronautics research center maintains an undergraduate internship program in the Science and Technology Graduate School. The Bachelor of Science degree program consists of thirteen courses including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Organic Chemistry. The Aeronautics & Astronautics department provides support services for the Bachelor of Science program and offers scholarships to students who qualify for the program. The Aeronautics & Astronautics management engineering department maintains internships in the field as well as professional development workshops. There is also an Associate’s Degree in Aviation Technology that is provided by the Air Force Academy.
The Aeronautics & Astronautics graduate program awards six degrees: Bachelor of Science (BS); Bachelor of Arts (BA); Master of Science (MSN), and Master of Science (MS). Students must attend the Air Force Academy or another accredited aeronautics school and complete a minimum of three years at an approved institution of higher learning. Upon graduation, graduates are qualified to take the national Aeronautics & Astronautics Association exam given in April of each year. The exam covers both the skills and knowledge of the graduate students and must be taken under the direction of a FAA certified examiner. If a graduate student passes this exam and wishes to go on to become an astronaut, he/she must again pass this certification exam.
